Disclosed are a process and intermediates of the formula <IMAGE> wherein R is -CH3 or -C(O)-OR1, and R1 is C1-C6 alkyl or -CH2C6H5; or the formula <IMAGE> wherein: R2 is H or OH, R is -C(O)OR1 and R1 is C1-C6 alkyl or -CH2C6H5, or where R2 is H, R can also be CH3; for preparing benzazepine intermediates of the formula <IMAGE> The benzazepine intermediates are useful for preparing benzazepines having activity as selective D1 receptor antagonists.
