PURPOSE: To obtain an adhesive consisting mainly of an aqueous emulsion comprising a specific dispersant and a specified dispersoid, excellent in water- resistant adhesiveness, low storage stability and fast coatability, and suitable as an adhesive for paper. CONSTITUTION: This adhesive consists mainly of an aqueous emulsion comprising (A) a modified PVA containing <=4Cα-olefin units in an amount of 1-10mol.% as a dispersing agent and (B) a (co)polymer of one or more monomers selected from among ethylenic unsaturated monomers as a dispersoid. For example, the saponification product of a copolymer of a vinylic ester such as vinyl acetate with anα-olefin such as ethylene wherein the degree of saponification and the degree of polymerization of the saponification product are >=95% and 300-2000, respectively, is preferably used as the component A in an amount of 2-3 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the component B.
