The envelope sheet (11,11') is gravity-fed (A) between two separated rollers (3,4) into an inclined holding pocket (1). A conveyor (10) delivers the insert(s) to the pocket lip (7), where a sensor (9) detects them. The front roller (4) is then moved (D) against the inner (3); a loop forms, enclosing the insert. The inner (3) and lower (5) rollers, imposing a fold, deliver the part-formed envelope, with insert, to another holding pocket (2). The sheet end, continuing between the rollers (3,5), then undergoes folding between the inner (3) and rear (6) rollers, producing the envelope flap, whose length automatically adjusts to suit the thickness of the insert(s). The envelope and contents passes (C) to be sealed (12), for which appropriate adhesive-coated zones on the sheet have been provided.
