The body of a small pen or other writing instrument (1) is mounted on a ring (2) dimensioned to fit on a user's finger. The pen body and ring are connected by an intermediate fastener such as a bolt or rivet, which may allow relative pivotal movement between the pen and ring. The pen body has a maximum length of 5cm, preferably between 4cm and 5cm. the ring may include a gap in its circumference and may be formed of metal or plastics material, in common with the pen body.
