PURPOSE: To eliminate infrared rays and ultraviolet rays included in light from a light source without exerting an adverse effect on the color and the brightness of a picture and to prevent the temperature from rising and the polarizing characteristic of a polarizing plate from being deteriorated as for a liquid crystal projector enlarging and projecting the picture displayed on a liquid crystal display panel by using a projection lens. CONSTITUTION: A mirror 5 whose reflectivity to infrared rays is low and a filter 6 whose transmissivity to ultraviolet rays is low are arranged on an optical path between the polarizing plate 18 and the light source 11 arranged on the incident side of the liquid crystal display panel 16. Then, the light from the light source 14 is reflected on the mirror 5, transmitted through the filter 6 and made incident on the plate 18. By respectively alotting the function for eliminating the infrared rays and the function for eliminating the ultraviolet rays to the mirror 5 and the filter 6, the infrared rays and the ultraviolet rays included in the light from the light source are effectively eliminated by using the mirror 5 constituted so that a priority is given to the absorbing characteristic to the infrared rays and the filter 6 constituted so that the priority is given to the reflecting or the absorbing characteristic to the ultraviolet rays. |
