A thermotropic macrocycle with two aromatic azomethine type blocks separated by two di-organo polysiloxane blocks, in which the aromatic ring carries substituents, has the formula (I); In (I), A = a direct bond, -O-, -CO-O- or -O-CO-; B<1> = -CH=N- or -N=CH-; B<2> = -N=CH= (when B<1> = -CH=N-) or -CH=N- (when B<1> = -N=CH-); D is a radical of formula (II); y = 0, 1 or 2; E (when y = 1) = a direct bond, -CH=N-, -N=CH-, -N=CH-Ph-CH=N- or -CH=N-Ph-N=CH- (where Ph = p-phenylene); E (when y = 2) = a direct bond, -N=CH-Ph-CH=N- or -CH=N-Ph-N=CH-; G<1>, G<2>, G<3> and G<4> = H, halogen, CN, OH, lower alkyl which is opt. substd. by one or more halogen atoms such as CF3, lower alkoxy or a radical OR (R = lower alkenyl gp.), or a carboxyalkyl gp., a radical HR'2 (R' = lower alkyl), NO2, a maleimide gp. of formula (III) or a nadimide gp. of formula (IV), provided that at least one of G<1>, G<2>, G<3> and G<4> is not H; R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5> and R<6> = a monovalent hydrocarbon radical chosen from 1-12C linear or branched alkyl gps., opt. substd. by one or more atoms of Cl, Br or F or by a -CN gp.; or a phenyl gp., opt. substd. by one or more 1-4C alkyl and/or alkoxy gps. or by one or more Cl atoms; x = 2-8; and n = 1-5. Also claimed are intermediates for the prepn. of the thermotropic macrocycles (I).
