The waste gas monitoring device has a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter sends a radiation influenced by the waste gas through the suction aperture to the receiver. A control is provided for the aspiration of the waste gas, which functions dependent upon the influence of the radiation through the waste gas. The transmitter (15) and the receiver (16) are arranged in at least one lateral chamber (11) of the steam evacuation hood, which is connected to the inner space of the hood (1) through a side wall (9) limiting the suction aperture (8). The otherwise closed chamber is connected to an air feed (14) via an input aperture (12).
