The method involves using a tool acting on a workpiece and the lubrication of the work region with a fixed quantity of lubricant. An underpressure is also applied to this region in order to draw off any filings that are produced by the action of the tool. The lubricant may be introduced by a dosing mechanism and the supply may be interrupted while the tool is acting on the workpiece. The lubricant may also be introduced in droplet form. The underpressure ranges from 0.2 to 0.6 bars, with a preferred value of 0.4 bars. The source of underpressure is connected to a suction draught (50) in which at least one of its basic parts is penetrated by a suction channel (70).
