Appts. for cleaning a wire, esp. for removing loose surface dirt or grease particles, has two opposite flexible wiper elements of pref. felt-like structure pressed against the moving wire surface to absorb the contaminants by rubbing action. The position of the wipers (2) relative to the wire (1) is controlled by means of a rotary drive (3,4) such that the wire (1) runs through a new, clean wiping area before the active wiping area reaches satn.
