A synthetic reinforcement (22) having a plurality of micro-recesses (58) on at least one surface (54) to facilitate adhesion to at least one wood structural member (10) and a process for making the same is disclosed. The synthetic reinforcement (22) is comprised of a plurality of continuous fibers (46) that are maintained in position by a resin encasement (50). The surface (54) of the synthetic reinforcement (22) is characterized by micro-recesses (58) that are located in a generally random pattern, which increases the surface area of the resin encasement. The micro-recesses are formed by way of the addition of an agent such as a solid particulate, liquid or a multiplicity of gas-filled spheroids into the raw resin and then abrading away the agent in the surface of the cured resin. The synthetic reinforcement (22) is connectable to a wood laminae (10) or to another synthetic reinforcement with commercial grade adhesives such as the resorcinol resins, which are suitable for adhering the wood laminae together. |
