Briquette prodn. from iron-contg. residues

Prodn. of iron-contg. briquettes, used in melting (esp. cupola) furnaces and formed from iron-contg. residues (millscale, grinding sludges or fettling dust), involves (a) mixing the residues with burnt lime to cause heat evolution and consolidation by reaction with the oil and/or water content of the residues; (b) adding an organic binder (sulphite waste liquor or molasses); (c) pressing to briquettes; and (d) hardening before supplying to the melting furnace. Also claimed is use of briquettes as secondary raw material in melting furnaces, the briquettes consisting of (by wt.) 70-98% iron-contg. residues and 2-30% lime-contg. binder which has been reacted with oil.
