Refractory ceramic component

A refractory ceramic component comprises sections wound in a bandage-like manner. The sections have cavities extending within the refractory material. In one embodiment a carrier material is coated with a refractory compound. The sections are manufactured by winding the bandage-like coated carrier and then drying tempering or firing. The carrier is shrunk vaporised or burnt out to leave the cavities. Alternatively the carrier may be of a refractory material and the coating a material which can be shrunk, vaporised, or burnt out to leave the cavities. The component may be a shroud, an immersion pipe, a lance or a monobloc stopper.
