The scarer deflects part of an oncoming vehicle's (12) headlamp beam to left or right at right angles to the direction travel by optical devices as plastics prisms (1,2) installed on spaced guide posts (7). The prisms have curved collecting mirrors (5) which dissipate the light through curved emission surface (3). Optical fibres are used to guide the light with collector lenses at their start and end and divided into two fibre bundles. The prisms deflect the light beams from the two vehicles (12,15) travelling in opposite directions (14,16) to right and left respectively. The traffic-facing parts of the post walls have apertures (8) backed by the respective prism units, as opposed to the traffic-parallel posts walls (7,9) which are backed by the emission surface of the prisms. The two prisms are bonded or screwed together and have noses or the like where they contact the post surfaces to engage wall holes provided.
