<p>A process for producing a multicomponent styrene/(meth)acrylate copolymer by conducting the aqueous solution polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising (1) 30-50 mol.% of a styrene compound, (2) 5-20 mol.% of a half-ester of an α,β-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or a salt of said half-ester, (3) 35-55 mol.% of (meth)acrylic acid or a salt thereof, and (4) less than 10 mol.% of an alkyl (meth)acrylate with the alkyl group bearing 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the presence of a water-insoluble radical polymerization initiator in a mixture of water and a lower alcohol solvent; a multicomponent styrene/(meth)acrylate copolymer produced thereby; and a paper surface size containing the copolymer. The size has an excellent sizing performance and substantially prevents foaming in the coating step, thus being quite easy to apply to actual paper machines.</p> |
