A projection system comprises a light source (1) and a lens system for providing an illuminating beam from the light source (1) of a predetermined cross section onto a spatial light modulator (7). A holographic surface (39) is provided in the light path from the light source to the spatial light modulator in order to change the cross-sectional format of the beam using all the incident light in the beam.
