SPINNER FOR PRODUCING DUAL COMPONENT FIBERS

An apparatus for making dual-component fibers (76) is provided and includes a distributor (60) having orifices (90) in the peripheral wall (64) and nested within a rotary spinner (100). The distributor (60)is divided into a series of generally vertically aligned compartments (88) by baffles (86) positioned circumferentially around the interior of the peripheral wall (64), with the orifices (90) communicating with the compartments (88). First and second molten thermoplastic materials (A, B) are supplied to the distributor (60) and centrifuged as alternating thin layers to the face (106) of the spinner (100). The spinner (100) is also rotated to centrifuge dual-component fibers (68) through the orifices (108) in the peripheral wall (102) of the spinner (100).
