Downhole drilling fluid and filter cake removal

Gelled and dehydrated drilling fluid and filter cake are removed from the walls of wellbores by contacting them with a removal composition comprising of an aqueous sugar solution, which causes disintegration of the drilling fluid and filter cake. The sugar is a mono-, di- or tri- saccharide (or any mixture of two or more thereof). The composition may also contain a surface active agent.
