PURPOSE: To obtain an expanding apparatus and method for determining the dimensions of drop-center wheel rims. CONSTITUTION: The rim is expanded by using a wedge assembly 60 fixed at one end of a headstock 44 of a rim expanding fixture 10. The wedge assembly is adapted to extend horizontally and concentrically through both of the element 40 of the headstock and the element 42 of a tailstock 46. The elements 40 and 42 move leftward as one unit and activate when abutting on the die elements 40 and 42 of segments so as to slide in operation to push die arrays 50, 52 and 54 outward in a radial direction by the action to drive in wedges, by which the elements are brought into abutment on the rim 20 so as to expand the rim.
