PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for dying paper by dyeing the paper with a specific cationic or basic azo dye in a yellow in reddish orange color having good fastness properties. SOLUTION: Paper is dyed in an orange color having excellent light fastness by using a cationic or basic azo dye of formulas I or II [X and Y are each H, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, a 1-4C alkylcarbonylamino, an arylcarbonylamino, a ureido or an arylureido; R1 is H, an alkyl, an aryl or the same as R2 ; R2 is a group capable of being cationized or protonated, or R1 and R2 form a 5- to 7-membered ring (containing a hetero atom) together with the linking nitrogen atom,; R3 is H, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl or the like; W is a group of formulas III to V (K is a coupling component; Z is a linking group; A is O, S or NH; R4 and R5 are each H, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl or the like)], especially the dye of formulas I or II wherein X is H, methyl or the like, and Y is H, methyl, methoxy or the like. Especially compounds of formulas VI and VII are suitable for dyeing the paper because of the high directivity.
