PURPOSE: To industrially and advantageously obtain a liquid crystal compound, useful as a blending component of a liquid crystal composition and excellent in anisotropy of refractive index by reacting a specific ethynylbenzene derivative with a specified aromatic halogen compound in the presence of a metallic catalyst and a basic substance. CONSTITUTION: This method for producing a tolan compound of formula III [X<1> to X<4> are each CH, CF, etc.; A is H, F, etc.; Y<1> to Y<4> are each X<1> ; R is a 1-12C alkyl, a 2-12C alkenyl, etc.] is to react an ethynylbenzene derivative of formula I with an aromatic halogen compound of formula II [D is a halogen or SOR' (R' is a lower alkyl or phenyl)] in the presence of a metallic catalyst (e.g. palladium acetate) and a basic substance (preferably a secondary or a tertiary amine such as diethylamine). For example, 1-(4-propylphenyl)-2-(4-(1- trans-pentenyl)phenyl)acetylene is obtained by using 4-propylphenylacetylene as the compound of formula I and 4-(1-trans-pentenyl)-bromobenzene as the compound of formula II. |
