PURPOSE: To obtain an adsorbent capable of specifically adsorbing and separating only basic proteins from a blood serum or liquid protein mixture by specifying the Ca/P molar ratio of a hydroxyapatite used as the constituent of the adsorbent and the calcining temp. of the hydroxyapatite. CONSTITUTION: A hydroxyapatite having a Ca/P molar ratio of 1.62 to 1.72 is used as this adsorbent and preferably, this hydroxyapatite has <=1.0m<2> /g specific surface area. Such a hydroxyapatite can be synthesized with a wet method that comprises suspending e.g. 5mol calcium hydroxide in water, then gradually dropping preferably 3mol phosphoric acid into the resulting suspension to allow them to react with each other, aging the reaction product and thereafter drying the aged reaction product, a dry method that comprises blending e.g. 3mol calcium pyrophosphate and 4mol calcium carbonate together, or the like. Subsequently, the hydroxyapatite thus synthesized is fired at >=1,100 deg.C and thereafter pulverized with a well known method, or alternatively, pulverized and thereafter fired at >=1,100 deg.C. The resulting calcined and pulverized hydroxyapatite is classified to obtain the objective adsorbent having 5 to 500μm particle size.
