SUBCARRIER MULTIPLE ACCESS PASSIVE OPTICAL NETWORK

Adjacent channel interference at an optical receiver of an optical network is significantly reduced using electrical bandwidth limiting means at optical transmitters of the network which narrow the bandwidth of the modulated subcarrier signal transmitted from the optical transmitters. An optical transmitter is responsive to an input data signal to generate a modulated subcarrier signal having a power density spectrum which includes substantially all of the main lobe and significantly attenuated side lobes of the modulated carrier signal. The modulated subcarrier signal is then used to modulate an optical source signal transmitted from the optical transmitter.
