The operating system provides the lamp with an AC signal having a basic harmonic (fo) with a frequency which is above the network frequency and which exhibits a frequency modulation of above 3 %. Pref. the basic harmonic has a frequency of between 15 and 100 kHz, with the modulation frequency obtained from the network frequency by a modulation signal generator (3) and fed to the modulation input (Emod) of an MF oscillator (1), providing the lamp operating signal.
