To encode binary information items in a, in particular optical transmission network having a star-, bus- or tree-shaped structure in which a number of terminals (CE) is connected to a central station (HE) and the transmission occurs in a time-division multiplex method within time slots (37) in each case allocated to one terminal (CE), the terminal (CE) transmits a code segment in the form of a number of bits which is smaller than the number of bits sent in the time slot and is smaller than the number of bits of the complete code, to the central station (HE) and the code is updated during the transmission between a terminal (CE) and the central station (HE), taking into consideration the code segment transmitted in each case.
