The detachable brush head (1, 2) has a socket connection (3, 18) with the handle (8). Two adjoining compartments (4, 5) contain contact sets, closed, either by a mercury blob or by a deflecting cantilever lamina, at each brush stroke. One set reacts to horizontal, the other to vertical strokes. These signals, passed to the electronic unit in the next compartment (9), increment the respective counters. An end compartment (10) holds the power supply battery. On reaching a preset stroke number, the counter lights the corresponding colour-coded tell-tale (6). Opt., the alarm may be aural. A reset button (7) is provided. Further functions - e.g. clock, thermometer, pH indicator - may be included, also a lamp to hold direct the brushing.
