The invention relates to a process for treating printed waste paper, in particular waste paper which contains at least 80% of newspapers or magazines, by disintegration, various purification stages, flotation or washing and defibration, the latter at a high consistency of at least 20%, and bleaching if necessary. The invention is characterised in that a final second defibration stage, located upstream of a bleaching stage if any, is carried out by treatment of the waste paper with strong kneading action of singular, rod-shaped or block-shaped kneading elements of both the stator and rotor of the defibration machine, which are arranged in a kneading chamber thereof which is bounded by two concentric cylinder surfaces, at temperatures of between 20 and 110 DEG C, preferably 38 to 65 DEG C, and a specific energy consumption of between 30 and 100, preferably 80, kWh/tonne of dry matter.

|
