The motor-brake combination includes an induction motor (2) having a stator (3) surrounding a standard squirrel-cage rotor (4) with non-magnetic shorting rings (7,8) at its ends (5,6). The brake (10) is constituted by a moving plate (13) mounted on the rotor shaft (9) and cooperating with a fixed plate (11) under the pressure of helical spring (12). Between the moving plate and the rotor, the magnetic flux is diverted by a ring of magnetic sectors (28) around a nonmagnetic hub (26). The radial face (31) of each sector away from the rotor is opposite that (30) of the moving plate.
