A flat envelope (1) of microporous material, mounted on, or below, transverse roof bars (8), is supplied with water from a header (6). Uniform circulation is encouraged by vertical fore-and-aft internal partitions; under each, externally, runs a closed tubular stiffener (4). A screen (9) shades the envelope from direct sunlight. Water cooled by evaporation is circulated (11, 12) by a pump (P) through the car heater heat-exchanger (R), the hot water connections being isolated by two-way valves (V). The heater fan (Ve), thermostatically controlled (Tc), circulates the cooled air. In a detachable variant, cooled air collected from the (open-ended stiffeners (4) is directed into the car by a window-mounted nozzle, opt., the envelope is in direct contact with the, unlined, roof.
