An electronic device for retainer systems for vehicle passengers comprises a final stage (1b) controlled by a control stage (1a). Each of the connecting leads (ZK+, ZK-) of the final stage (1b) can be connected to the earth terminal via a component (S2, S3) controllable by a microcomputer (2). All the essential components, especially the final stage (1b) can be checked by assessing the voltage on the line (ZK+).
