SO3 is obtd. by the catalytic oxidn. of SO2 in a 2-stage, 3-layer contact reactor, whose catalyst layer is stationary, with intermediate absorption of the SO3. A 3-way valve passes the SO2 alternatively to the 1st or 2nd layer of the 1st stage. An internal heat exchanger/mixer between the 2 layers of the 1st oxidn. stage partially cools the gas flow and SO3 is absorbed at absorber. SO2 not oxidised in the 1st stage is passed to the 2nd stage via the 3-way valve and then to final absorption via an SO3 3-way valve.
