The proposal is for a starting aid system especially for a diesel engine, comprising a starting aid device (16) fitted in a combustion chamber (13) or an intake pipe which takes the injected stream (15) of fuel into an ignitable state. The starting aid device (16) is an oxygen pumping cell (18) operating on the basis of an oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte by means of which oxygen is pumped at least into the peripheral region of the injected stream (15).
