A horizontal carousel storage system comprises a plurality of storage units (12) and a drive mechanism including a drive element (14) that is coupled to the storage units (12), wherein at least a part of the drive element (14) passes below at least a part of the storage or carrying capacity of at least one of the storage units (12). The system also comprises a structure (64) providing support for the storage units (12), said structure (64) being disposed so that the weight of the storage units (12) serves to stabilize the support structure.
