A shield (10) for use in connection with a workholding apparatus (20) that has a base (22) and at least two jaw members (36, 38) operably supported on the base (22) for selectively clamping a workpiece therebetween. The shield (10) comprises a plate member (12) adapted to be removably received on the base (22) and configured to permit at least one jaw member (36, 38) to move relative thereto. The plate member (12) may be sized to provide the workholding apparatus (20) with a worksurface that is wider than the base (22).
