Equipment for the development of a knitting machine control programme comprises an input unit (16) for entering data groups, esp. shape, colour and structure, to define the knitted item, graphics unit (20) and screen (21) for data reproduction and a control programme generator (60) for the prodn. of all knitting machine (64) element programmes relating to the item. A programme development unit (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) is allotted to each data group, from which is produced an instruction sequence for each required machine (64) element in at least one processing step where the graphics unit plays a part at least. During at least part of the process, each development unit selectively modifies the results in the light of amendments from the input unit and reproduces these in the form of altered instruction sequences for the generator which produces a new control programme from all the development units.
