Carbon/polymer composite for rechargeable lithium battery

The novel feature in a carbon/polymer composite electrode for a rechargeable Li battery and of the type having a polymer shell over the carbon and made ionically conductive by addn. of an Li salt, is that the volatiles content in the carbon is 5-22 (pref. 10-22)%. Claimed prodn. of the electrode is by (a) vacuum drying the carbon in a protective gas atmos. at at most 600 deg C; (b) making the carbon into a powder of ave. size at most 10 microns; (c) mixing with the polymer and Li salt; and (d) either (i) pressing the mixt. uniaxially or isostatically at above 5mPa to give a compact electrode or (ii) adding a solvent or fluidiser to the mixt. and coating it onto a metal collector. A claimed rechargeable electrochemical Li battery using the above electrode as the negative electrode has a positive electrode made of a lithiated oxide of Co, Ni, Mn and/or V.
