A phase-shift between the output signals of the two magnetic sensors (12,13) is determined using plus or minus signs. With a positive phase-shift it gives one travel direction, and with a negative phase-shift, the other travel direction is given as the travel direction (14) of the vehicle (10). The magnetic sensors are arranged orthogonally i.e. X and Y directions in a horizontal plane at the side of the roadway (11). The time point of the occurrence of an absolute max. in the output signal in one magnetic sensor (12) of the two sensors, is determined for the positive or negative sign determination of the phase-shift. At this time point, the gradient of the output signal of the other magnetic sensor (13) is determined and its positive or negative sign is given.
