Polymer composite materials prodn. in solvent-free process

The prodn. of a polymeric composite material (I) comprises polymerising a composite (II) contg. a flexible polymer (M) and a rigid oligomer or polymer (P) in the solid state at a temp. above that at which the rigid oligomer/polymer can be polymerised but below the Tg of the rigid polymer, in order to increase the degree of polymerisation. Also claimed is material (I) obtd. by this process. Pref. the process may also include the formation of (P) by polymerising a mixt. of polymer (M) and a monomer or oligomer, before the above solid-state polymerisation. Suitable precursors comprise: (a) aromatic polyesters and derivs. thereof, derived from aromatic hydroxy-acids or aromatic diols and dicarboxylic acids and (b) aromatic polyamides and derivs. thereof, derived from aromatic amino-acids or aromatic diamines and dicarboxylic acids, or monomers, oligomers or precursor units thereof.
