In a cleaning process using a filter medium on rotary drum filters, for the sepn. of solids from industrial and municipal waste water, where flow is outwards, the continuous speed of rotation of the drum is controlled to be faster or slower depending on the water level inside the drum. The cleaning process takes place continuously as a function of the continuously controlled speed of rotation of the drum, by means of filtrate and/or compressed air directed inwards along the surface of the drum.
