A cooker uses a cable-free remote control unit 1. The receiver electronics 14, 15 are electrically coupled to the controls 16, 17. The transmitter generates and radiates at least two different setpoint control signals for the duration of the activity that has been switched on. The electronics switch off the activity on the absence of at least one of these signals. By "activities" is meant the use of the heating elements. The transmitter has at least two spatially-separated transmitting zones, each possessing two independent transmitting elements 8,9 connected to different sources 6,7. Similarly, the receiver has two receiving zones, each with a pair of independent receiving elements 12, 13 connected to two separate electronic units 14, 15.
