Multi-tasking processing system

The system has a data bus (D) and a control bus (C). Each of a number of operators (10) may carry out processing, and may transmit a control request to receive an instruction via the control bus, and a transfer request in response to the response to the control request to receive or provide data in the course of processing. A memory controller (12) arbitrates between the transfer requests and manages the data transfers between the operators and the memory on the data bus. A sequencer (16) manages the control requests and determines the instructions to provide to the operators and manages the transfer of these instructions via the control bus.
