Mono- and di-(N-(vinylsulphonylalkyl(phenyl))-phthalimid-4-yl)-azo (precursor) cpds. of formula (I) are new. In (I), K = the radical of a coupling component; s = 1 or 2; R, R' = H, -SO3H, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, halogen or CN; A = 1-6C alkylene, opt. substd. by halogen, OH, -OSO3H, -COOH, CN, 2-4 C alkanoyloxy, 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl or carbamoyl or with a -O- or -NR''- gp. in the chain; or 1-6C alkylene-phenylene, in which the phenylene gp. is opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, halogen or -SO3H; R'' = H or 1-4C alkyl; Y = vinyl or -CH2-CH2-U; U = a gp. eliminated by alkali.
