PURPOSE: To improve the recording and reproducing characteristics of a diagonally anisotropic magnetic recording medium. CONSTITUTION: This ring type magnetic head of a metal-in-gap type constitutes a magnetic circuit having a gap by disposing a first magnetic core half body formed to deposit a soft magnetic metallic film on a ferromagnetic ferrite surface and a second magnetic core half body opposite to each other. The average film thickness of the soft magnetic metallic film 3a deposited on the gap forming surface of the first magnetic core half body is >=1.5μm and the average film thickness of the soft magnetic metallic film 3b deposited on the gap forming surface of the second magnetic core half body is made larger than twice the average film thickness of the soft magnetic metallic film deposited on the gap forming surface of the first magnetic core half body.
