PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording and reproducing device with which overwriting and erasing characteristics are assured and the reduction of electric power to medium noises per unit magnetization transition region is possible and which features low noise and high s/N. CONSTITUTION: This magnetic recording and reproducing device inverts the magnetization of information by a magnetic head and records this information on a magnetic recording medium. The overwriting and erasing characteristics at <=1 micrometer (μm) in the wavelength of the highest recording frequency of this device is confined to <=-40decibel (dB).
