PURPOSE: To automatically check the performance of a reader with high precision by guiding a reference medium which has a reference read surface to a read position and checking the performance of the device, and retracting the reference medium from the read position in a check unused state. CONSTITUTION: The reference card for checking the performance of the image reader 13 is stored and held at a reference card stand-by part 15. The reference card is constituted by forming an irradiated reference surface which is nearly as thick as a transaction card on one side of the top surface in the conveyance direction when the card is divided into two in a stepped shape and also forming a thick cleaning surface on the other side. The irradiated reference surface of the reference card is stopped facing the read irradiation position of the image reader 13. Then, the irradiated reference surface is irradiated with an irradiating light beam emitted by the light emission unit of the image reader 13. Its reflected light beam is read by the image sensor and it is checked whether or not the signal level is larger than a certain output. |
