PURPOSE: To obtain an STN-LCD and more particular color LTN-LCD which is free from unequal display, has high display quality and is low in cost without specifying the constitution of a liquid crystal display device. CONSTITUTION: The product of the layer thickness of a liquid crystal layer 1 for driving and the double refraction of nematic liquid crystals 18 specified to >=0.8 to <=0.9μm, the azimuth of the transmission axis of au upper polarizing plate 13 to >=-20 to <=20 deg., the azimuth of the transmission axis of a lower polarizing plate 23 to >=-20 to <=20 deg., the azimuth of the delay phase axis of an upper phase palate 19 to >=90 to <=20 deg. ET, the azimuth of the delay phase axis of a lower phase plate 29 to >=110 to <=150 deg. and the retardations at the wavelength 550nm of the upper phase plate 19 and the lower phase plate 29 are respectively specified to >=450 to <=550nm and >=300 to <=380nm. As a result, the display which is colorless in hue at the time of bright display and at the time of assigning respective intensity levels and has a high contrast ratio is obtd. in normally open display. |
