PURPOSE: To provide selective reconfiguration for a multi-application personal communication device. CONSTITUTION: An option connection connector 126 makes a 1st sign bit combination indicating the formation of a public switching telephone network connection 200 to a device 100 and the presence of the bit combination calls a program which provides a proper connection between a PSTN link 200 and a telephone, etc., in the device. The connection is made by a voice multiplexer 160 which receives a control signal from a system CPU 106 while a program is executed. Communication application having its program selected is judged and the PSTN link is selectively constituted so that the PSTN link is connected to an earphone 117, etc., for voice communication. The absence of the option connection connector 126 generates a default sign bit combination informing the device that the user desires a cellular telephone network connection, and the presence of the bit combination becomes a signal showing the provision of telephone, etc., on a cellular telephone network to the device.
