PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for encoding which adjust a video signal so that the contouring in an image reproduced from a compressed video signal is reduced. SOLUTION: A method and device for encoding which adjust the video signal so that the contouring of the image reproduced from the compressed (14) video signal is reduced include efficient amplification of a noise at the part of a video signal representing a relatively smooth image area by preadjustment of the video signal. In a preferable embodiment, a memory is programmed at respective address locations and then the amplitude value of a digitized (11) signal supplied as an address is remapped in the memory (13). Programming is so arranged as to expand the range of low amplitude values and efficiently pass higher unaltered amplitude values.
