A ring binder which is easy to grasp at the spine. A ring binder (101) includes a stiffener assembly (113) which has front (115) and rear (117) stiffener panels that are interconnected by a flexible backing (119). The stiffener assembly (113) being devoid of any stiffeners disposed between the front and rear cover stiffener panels (115, 117). Canvas material is secured to the interior (121) and exterior (123) surface of the stiffener assembly (113). A ring assembly (141) is secured to the rear cover stiffener assembly (117). In this manner, the surface sheets (121, 123) and the stiffener assembly (113) cooperatively define a binder cover (131) having front and re ar covers (133, 135) interconnected by a flexible spine (137), the flexible spi ne (137) being comformable about the ring assembly (141).
