A process for filling a washing soln. container (2) of a washing machine in an initial program stage involves registering the water level by means of a level sensor with at least one reference level (Nmin). The container (2) is at first filled up to a level which lies above the reference level (Nmin). The absorption time (TS) is measured until the water level has sunk to the reference level (Nmin) with the help of a time measuring device. An overfilling level is determined in one of the subsequent filling steps. Also claimed is the associated washing machine.
