The appts. includes a self-supporting hollow cylinder rolled from Ni-Fe sheeting (1) with overlapping edges (1a,1b). Infrared absorption by the gaseous mixture is measured between an electrically pulsed filament lamp (2) at one end of the cylinder and a radiation receiver (3) with an integral narrow-band filter at the other end. The cylinder has a thin coating of gold to ensure repeated reflection of the infrared emission which is propagated towards the receiver without additional adjustment. The path length via reflections at the internal wall is approximately twice that of the direct propagation.
